New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Explainpaper – Explain jargon in academic papers with GPT-3

Show HN: Explainpaper – Explain jargon in academic papers with GPT-3 25 by aman_jha | 2 comments heyo! Explainpaper lets you upload a research paper PDF. If you don't understand a formula or sentence, just highlight it and the tool explains it for you I built this a few weeks ago to help me read a neuroscience paper, and it works pretty well! I didn't fine-tune GPT-3, but I do take a lot of context from the paper and feed that into the prompt (not the whole paper). Ppl have uploaded AI, biology, economics, philosophy papers and even law documents. Works in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French and more as well! on Hacker News. heyo! New top story on Hacker News: Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal

Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal 80 by DicIfTEx | 10 comments I don't usually go in for conspiracy theories, but this one seems pretty clear-cut and I can't see anyone else discussing it online: WhatsApp appears to be selectively censoring references to Signal. Specifically, I had changed my profile picture on WhatsApp to the Signal logo and my ‘About’ text to ‘Message me on Signal - https://signal.org/download/’. However, I noticed recently (after someone happened to open their WhatsApp in front of me and I saw their chat with me) that my WhatsApp contacts are seeing my profile picture and my ‘About’ text as blank. I've checked and this seems to be the case for all of my WhatsApp contacts. See screenshots from me and my friend's phones here: https://imgur.com/a/qvEsswW On the bright side, this serves as an ideal demo for convincing anyone who doesn't understand why I am trying to migrate them over to Signal. So, I guess, thanks Meta? ...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How did you find joy in life?

Ask HN: How did you find joy in life? 20 by jamilaghasiyev | 33 comments I can't find joy in life. Nothing interesting. When I think rationally I am excepting myself as whom I'm. Yes, for example, friends talk to me passionately about something (music, events, chess, etc..). I'm just like, "yeah, interesting". I never feel excited about anything deeply. I admire people like Feynman who are passionate and curious about science, life, to learn. I want to feel like them but nothing triggers that type of feeling. In the end, I'm just passing my days. Naval says in his book something like " we will be forgotten 100000 years from now. There is no meaning". this is not the case for me. I don't want to be remembered or make something useful for people, for the world. I just want to be curious, and passionate like Zorba (Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis), like Feynman. Without curiosity, man is nothing. If you had experienced this type of thing, how ...

New top story on Hacker News: Tell HN: How to contribute to open source as a junior engineer

Tell HN: How to contribute to open source as a junior engineer 11 by Shindi | 6 comments Hi all, just wanted to write a brief guide on how to contribute to open source. Saw a thread from a new engineer who wanted to know how to prove that they can work fully remote in order to get a fully remote job. Getting these type of jobs are harder as a junior employee because you don't have a track record. Contributing to open source demonstrates you go out of your way to improve code, can make changes to a new code base on your own, and can ask for help to get unstuck. Not only can it help you get a remote job, it'll improve your chances at getting prestigious jobs. I made a few small open source contributions and made some mistakes so want to share what I learned. 1. Find a good project What is a good project? One looking for help, in a language you know, and where you can get the project running on your own. If you look around github, you'll see some projects have issues with a N...
