New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How can I get into cyber security research?

Ask HN: How can I get into cyber security research? 6 by wdym | 0 comments Quick background: I am a tech lead in a SRE team. I am not sure this is what I want for the rest of my life. I love the sec field. In the last few years I've played lots of CTFs, pwned several boxes on Hack the Box, studied and reproduced CVEs, etc. I have the technical knowledge. I don't think that I want to do pentests or bug bounty. I'm more into research. I like to be the one ahead discovering new stuff. But, how do I get there? Who hires someone like that? What do you need to get the role? How is this job for real? So many questions. on Hacker News. Quick background: I am a tech lead in a SRE team. New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Knotend – a keyboard-driven flowchart editor

Show HN: Knotend – a keyboard-driven flowchart editor 16 by escot | 6 comments Hey all, I made knotend [0] because I wanted a flowchart editor that was keyboard-driven and super fast. I was tired of dragging boxes around on a canvas. You may have seen knotend around here before when I wrote an initial blog post [1] about why I wanted a new kind of flowchart editor. Thank you to everyone who has given me feedback here on HN! Since that blog post I’ve been working hard to get to a v1 which I’m showing now. You can use the free version without having to sign up for an account. I would love your feedback! What makes knotend different is two main things: 1) The nodes are constrained to a grid which enables a keyboard-centric experience for selection and navigation, and 2) there’s autolayout so each time you add a node, the graph automatically lays itself out and places each node in a cell. In the future I’ll be working on supporting more complex editing actions, linking graphs together, co...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: A tool for motion-capturing 3D characters using a VR headset

Show HN: A tool for motion-capturing 3D characters using a VR headset 6 by diegomacario | 0 comments Hi everyone! I'm one of the authors of this project. The demo you see here is powered by a tool that I recently helped develop and open-source at Shopify called handy. You can find the repo here: https://github.com/Shopify/handy Most people don't realize that VR headsets have become really capable motion capture platforms, so we decided to release this tool to bring motion capture into the hands of everyone who owns a headset. With a cheap Quest 2 you can capture your hands using the headset's hand-tracking feature and your head. With an expensive Quest Pro you could capture your facial expressions using the headset's eye and face-tracking features. Thanks for checking this project out! I'm here to answer questions if you have any. on Hacker News. Hi everyone! I'm one of the authors of this project. The demo you see here is powered by a tool that I recently he...

Show HN: Ello (YC W20) – AI-reading tutor for kids that works with real books 8 by tomsayer | 1 comments Hi HN, We’re Elizabeth, Catalin, and Tom - the founders of Ello ( https://www.helloello.com ). Ello is an AI-powered app that mimics the one-on-one interaction of a reading tutor by listening to, encouraging, and coaching kids grade K-3 as they read out loud from a real book. We posted on HN back in 2020 when we launched Trustle, a company designed to pair families with dedicated experts in child development. We learned from that experience that parents don’t want a consultant, but they do want actual help with specific challenges—one of the biggest being reading. Prior to COVID, 65% of 4th graders in the U.S. were reading behind level. The most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress report revealed that reading levels have dropped even further, to the lowest level since 1992. These disheartening statistics reinforce something we learned during our time at Trustle—of al...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Why isn't JSON-RPC more widely adopted?

Ask HN: Why isn't JSON-RPC more widely adopted? 21 by vyrotek | 12 comments JSON-RPC / OpenRPC seems like a great option for APIs. Why isn't it adopted more widely? Many of the APIs of projects I've worked with look like essentially like RPC style calls. The URLs are structured as action/method names to do specific things. I like many of the benefits to an RPC approach compared to REST, GraphQL, or gRPC-Web. Unfortunately, the client code generation with popular options feels clunky when you want to use them in an RPC style. It seems like JSON-RPC would be better. https://open-rpc.org https://www.jsonrpc.org on Hacker News. JSON-RPC / OpenRPC seems like a great option for APIs. Why isn't it adopted more widely? New top story on Hacker News: Tell HN: Did you know that you can help restore a person’s eyesight for $50?

Tell HN: Did you know that you can help restore a person’s eyesight for $50? 72 by munchhausen | 7 comments Dear HN, Is there a better way to start a year than with acts of generosity? Recently, I learned about the Seva Foundation, which counts Larry Brilliant, Ram Dass and Steve Jobs among its founders. The foundation's mission is to "build sustainable eye care systems worldwide by creating equitable access to eye care, building capacity of new and existing eye hospitals and systems, and collecting and learning from evidence." I perused their website, and was taken aback by how common it is in many parts of the world for scores of people to suffer from vision impairment due to cataracts - a condition that can be easily cured with a simple surgery that costs 50$ to carry out. It is a powerful reminder of the stark inequalities that exist in the world. I feel grateful that there are people like the Seva Foundation, who are doing something about it. You can learn more abou...
